My “first” blog

Hello world! Welcome to my homepage.

The initial idea of having this site is to have a platform to demonstrate my work. Since getting academic publication has been a long process, blogging can be a quicker way to express my research ideas. Thanks to my friend Eric Tee for helping me to set up this website. I am only a beginner of WordPress and HTML/CSS. Feel free to leave comments if you have any suggestion for improvement.

I would call myself a researcher in international relations and maritime security. My research interest is about how China, as a rising regional sea power, interacts with other states in maritime politics. This could include sea power ideology, maritime governance, blue crimes, offshore territorial disputes, naval development and other maritime related topics. So if you are interested in this area, you have come to the right place. Of course, every opinions are my own.

Another motivation of setting up this website is to blog about my research life. I have read many blogs, giving out suggestions about how to pursue a good research career. However, every research path is unique. I hope I can share some of my experiences as well.

I also see this website as a training ground to get me out from academic writing. This is because, after studying and research in the tertiary education sector for more than a decade, I am too familiar with academic-style of writing — long sentences, jargons, lots of conjunction and reporting verbs. It is time for me to try something new.

In fact, I have been writing for an online media in Hong Kong since 2014. In the last six years, I have been writing all kinds of topics given that I have lots of interests, including Hong Kong politics, political theology, sports analytics, books and movies. They are all written in Chinese (click here for more). So, technically speaking, this is not my first time blogging. I will try to have more blogging on my research interests, namely maritime security and governance, but this blog will definitely include all different kinds of topics.

Finally, this personal website is that it has a Chinese version. All the translation are done by myself (as I am a bilingual), both traditional and simplified Chinese. Simply click the flag at the bottom right and you will be directed to the Chinese homepage. Feel free to recommend this site to your Chinese friends.

I will try to update this website every week. So come and visit regularly so you do not miss out any content.
